Attending the well organised and free Bunkfest in Wallingford on Saturday a pleasant surprise was former Devon General Sea Dog open top Metro-Cammell bodied Leyland Atlantean, Sir Martin Frobisher, working the Park & Ride to car parks on the nearby industrial estate to the Festival close to the town centre. Sadly the weather was not the best for an open topper, but at least it was dry! New in 1961 as DL927 (927GTA) it was one of nine allocated to Torquay area open top services. All nine had roofs that were capable of being attached for the winter. The bus is now owned by the Berkshire Big Red Bus Company who unsurprisingly own three Routemasters too. All are available for hire for events of all kinds, indeed, DL927, now registered 724XUW, was last seen by Nidhi Sharma in January on a Christmas Lights tour of London.
The Atlantean was not the only bus at Bunkfest, a former Belfast Alexander bodied Bristol RELL6G, 2539 (AXI2539), looking all of its 42 years, was serving as one of the many refreshment stands!
