MBTA is not only responsible for the 'T' bus services, but for streetcars, subway trains and ferry routes too. The urban tram network is "The Green Line" with trams in a green livery relieved by silver grey or cream. This car was built by Kinki-Sharyo, a batch which followed on from Boeing cars similar to ones delivered to San Francisco MUNI at the same time. The "Buy American" policy was indeed a political decision and the cars were not without their problems - perhaps Boeing should have stuck to 747 jets! In common with the Californian network, as these pictures show, the cars double as streetcars and subway cars. This one, 3674, is seen in the university area of Berkeley in October 1998.

Unlike 3674 above, Kinki-Sharyo 3715 is underground in downtown Boston. Like San Francisco the underground routes bifurcate after regaining the surface. However, unlike the Californian system the cars do not join from different routes to form trains for the underground journey.

The short route from the city to Lechmerle is actually elevated, Chicago style, for a portion of its journey.
