Last Saturday Metrobus held a Open Day at their depot near Gatwick Airport. The event was well attended and the company put on an excellent display of new and preserved vehicles, not all associated with the company. There was a bus pull competition, depot tours, trips through the bus wash on a sparkling clean Scania decker and local bus rides which even featured on bus stop local departure displays. The big pull factor was Metrobus' fleet of hydrogen powered buses. Wrightbus GB Kite singledeckers in Fastway livery link Gatwick with Croydon and their environs on a ten minute frequency with the servie operating 24 hours. When thoughts turned to replacing the fleet of Wright bodied Volvos with more environmentally friendly buses hydrogen powered won out over electric as the 24 hour nature of the Fastway service would have required the purchase of additional buses as there would always be some idle during their charging cycle. Whilst the hydrogen buses individually cost more overall the outlay was less. A hydrogen bus takes about the same time to refill as a diesel. The decision was not without its problems. Electric buses are often delayed entry into service whilst the charging infrastructure and access to the national grid takes time, the hydrogen buses were delayed by the local council being concerned about the safety of the hydrogen fuel tank at the depot. Our picture is of Wright Streetdeck Hydroliner 6807 (LV74CDX), one of several doubledeckers which subsequently joined the fleet. It is seen on the 420 to Sutton, shortly after leaving Crawley Bus Station.
