Diamond South East Custom Denning Element 2 39002
As we have been indulging in UK content for a few weeks on Friday we happened on a bus with an Australian connection. Built in Sydney, this Custom Denning Element 2 is the first of a trio of electric buses being operated by Diamond South East, a division of Rotala. Whilst the bus is liveried for a shuttle service for the Bloom Heathrow Business Park it is actually operating a Hotel Shuttle. The legal lettering for Diamond South East is for Hallmarks Coaches which acquired the midlands based Dunn-Line and merged with Flights eventually the companies became the Rotala group trading as Diamond. The Dunn family are involved with Rotala, but a member of the family emigrated to Australia and started operating buses there, first acquiring and expanding Sydney based Telfords. The opportunity was then taken to buy manufacturer Custom Coaches in 2018. Customs had fallen on hard times when Sydney Buses switched to buying Bustech buses made in Queensland. Australia bus manufacturers have a long history of falling in and out of favour with state governments. Bustech had been doing good business in Adelaide and opened a factory down there which is currently in administration, likewise Volgren established a plant in New South Wales to body over 100 Volvo B12BLEA artics for Sydney, but once the order was fulfilled no more followed and the factory was closed and staff made redundant. In 2019 the Dunns acquired Denning Manufacturing in Brisbane. The company had a long history of body building but also making complete vehicles. The Dunns harvested this expertise and came up with new integral electric and hydrogen powered buses. The former have been successful with examples entering service in Canberra, Melbourne and - more successfully - in Sydney, the home grown model competing with the inevitable Chinese BYD and Yutongs. Activities are now centred in Sydney and the Custom Denning company has its eyes on the UK market and has even developed a doubledeck electric Element.
