The narrow and twisty streets, often on inclines around the eastern suburbs call out for shorter than usual buses. With the departure of the Mercedes O405 models, were replacements were called for. Sydney Buses trialled a short Scania with Volgren CR228L body, a Bustech MDi and Custom Enviro200. They settled on a short version of the Scania K280UB chassis, of which there were a number in the fleet, but bodied with a short version of he Bustech VST body, the VSTM. Squeezing around Tamarama Bay on the 361 is one of the 27 short buses, 2678 (2678ST), seen in January 2018 and delivered in 2015.

In January 2016 2703 (2703ST) is seen on the 380 outside Bondi Junction interchange and headed for the city. Numerically it and 2704 are separated from the other short Scanias by 2696-2702, the batch of Volgren Optimus Iveco Metros acquired from dealer stock, but delivered a few months before the Scanias.

The 400 is the usual stomping ground of the 14.5m long Scania L113TRB giants, not a short Scania, but 2680 (2680ST) is seen at work on a 400 in Randwick in December 2017. Whilst it is unlikely, if not imposible for a 14.5m Scania to be negotiating the narrow streets around the bays, doubtless 12.5m long Custom Citaros were being man handled on the Scania's usual route - a common occurence.
