The Melbourne Grand Prix disrupts normal service on route 96 with buses replacing the secion between the city and St Kilda and the tram service from the north terminating in the city. The normal reserved track on the old railway line and the regular Combino trams - amongst others - shuttle express from Southern Cross Station via the Crown Casino to the race track entrances in Albert Park. Seen on duty for the 2013 Grand Prix in March is 5007 with desto set to "Express - GP Gates 1 & 2".

Two D2 class trams, 5013 in front, wait having arrived at the far Grand Prix gate while a third tram ahead is about to switch tracks to return to the city, a manoeuvre that the pair will also negotiate in turn.

Another annual disruption occurs during the St Kilda Festival. This view at St Kilda Station in February 2012 shows that the track through to Acland Street is closed off, the whole area being pedestrianised for the day - they even set up a champagen bar on the tram tracks along the Esplanade.

Car 5017 then had to reverse out of the station and switch tracks back to East Brunswick.

As 5017 departs, Class B car 2052 waits to come in and off load, one of many duplicates working that day.
