An unusual arrangement was the leasing of five Alstom Citadis cars intended for the French town of Mulhouse. The five cars entered service from February 2008 and were destined to return from December 2011. In the upshot, Melbourne agreed to purchase the set. The trams are painted in Mulhouse's livery, they also carry a confusion of numbers. First off they have their Mulhouse fleet numbers. They then have Yarra Trams fleet numbers, which are assigned in a random set in the 5000 series used for the five section Combino units. The cars are probably better known by their Bumblebee numbers 1 to 5. Less prominent than most is the first seen here in August 2008, Bumblebee 1, Yarra Trams 5123 and Mulhouse 2023. It carries all three identities.

The trams had a poster inside explaining their livery as designed for use as a ray of sunlight passing through Mulhouse.

The graphics on Bumblebee 1 differ from the other four cars, inviting passengers to "Step into the Future". Once aboard this is the scene they would be greeted with.

Bumblebee 1, aka Yarra Trams 5123, is seen passing the Melbourne Exhibition Centre - on the right - with the Crown casino and entertainment complex to the left. The picture was taken as the tram enters the city from St Kilda on a beautiful day in April 2010.

Still looking good in April 2012, Bumblebee 1 is heading for the city again on the 96 but this time is at the recently installed Esplanade tram stop in St Kilda.
