In the days before the Ford Transit and the LDV Sherpa minibuses were the Cinderellas of the bus industry. Ford made some attempt with the A-series, which naturally saw greater use as a truck, though many local authorities found them useful for welfare services. Alexander produced a good bus body, as seen on Provincial 48 (NEL107P) which passed for service with Alder Valley as 504. |

Marlow's suspension bridge has been a problem for many years. Thames Valley used lightweight Bristol SC4LK, followed by secondhand Bristol SU. The by-pass built in the seventies relieved the bridge which was in danger of collapse. It also isolated the community of Bisham on the south side of the Thames, with the 18 Maidenhead - Marlow bus service diverting via the by-pass. In 1974 relief came in the shape of specially commissioned Ascough bodied Leyland Redline 19 seat minibuses. The Redline EA440 chassis was primarily a truck chassis and the bodies were specially built in Southern Ireland. Redline 501 (UJB501N) was displayed at the Earls Court Commercial Motor Show when new and visited by members of Bisham Parish Council. It is seen here in Quoiting Square, Marlow. |
Asco 503 (GPC729N) is seen crossing the offending bridge on route to Maidenhead. |
A passenger boards one of the three buses somewhere near "The Golden Ball" on route from Maidenhead to Marlow. |
