Friday June 4th 2004 was the last day of operation by Routemasters of route 8 between Victoria and Bow. It was the last day Stagecoach, a keen Routemaster operator, would operate Routemasters in London. These daytime pictures show many of the vehicles used on the route that day paying homage to the Routemaster's 50 years of service in the capital city. |
RML2665 (SMK665F) had been painted in a version of Stagecoach's national livery for the last week of operation of route 8 in Cheapside.

Earlier in the year RML2456 (JJD456D) had been repainted in country area livery which it wore when new. It too is in Cheapside, heading for Victoria.

Also seen near Liverpool Street is RMC1461. The former Green Line coach is still owned by Stagecoach and was used regularly on the 15 route, especially on commuter express journeys. It is followed by one of Arriva's new Citaro bendibuses on route 149, once operated by ex BEA Routemasters.

In the spirit of the occasion, First made RM1650 (650DYE) available. It had recently repainted the bus in the livery worn to celebrate Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and had been one of the buses selected to wear gold for the 2002 Jubilee. Arriva also made RM5 (VLT5) available, the oldest Routemaster still in service. Covent Garden Museum also had RM1 (SLT56) out on service. Silver Jubilee RM1650 is heading for Victoria past Liverpool Street Station.
