A far cry from the Australian Optare Solos of the last two weeks is this New Orleans streetcar. Built by Perley A Thomas Car Works in Northern Carolina car 945 is over 90 years old. It is not on the renown Desire line but on the St Charles Avenue line, the oldest continuously running street railway in the world. Hurricane Katrina did relatively little damage to New Orleans streetcar system. Biggest problems were with fallen trees and trolley poles. The green cars, like 945, were in a sealed barn in an area that was not flooded. More recent 31 mock vintage cars however disappeared under five feet of water in their barn. Restoration of each was around $1000000 and was finally completed in 2009, four years after the storm. We are grateful to Anthony Davis for sending in this interesting picture of 945 taken last weekend.
