This is a sign of the times, an electric bus replacing an electric tram. A major arson attack on a night club in Prahran, one of Melbourne's vibrant suburbs ten days ago left the building in a precarious state with what remains of the roof likely to collapse on the street below, Chapel Street. The famous street is also home to one of the few tram routes that does not head to the city centre. It is a dead straight line from Balaclava through to North Richmond. Ventura is the usual operator to step in when tram or rail replacement is needed in the area, though their area of bus operation is to the east. They maintain a fleet specifically for the activity comprising time expired buses, typically around twenty years old. So with Chapel Street closed for over a week those buses have been busy shuttling between North Richmond and Balaclava and even getting proper blind displays programmed alongside window stickers, whereas bland "Tram all routes" displays. So it was a surprise to see one of the fleets fully electric Volgren Optimus bodied BYD D9RA buses on the 78 on Wednesday, complete with a 78 blind display. Unfortunately it is headed for Balaclava, not North Richmond as shown! The year old bus, 1613 (BS10YU), is seen in Windsor with the road closure some distance behind it, which it has had to divert around. Lettering on the side proclaims the bus is 100% electric and made in Melbourne, avoiding any mention of the vital Chinese electrical compnoent.
