Mount Washington - or Coal Hill as it was known - was a physical barrier to travel and many incline railways helped to scale its steep side. Initially these were freight lines, usually for coal, but they were adapted for passengers. Just two of the many lines survive, now side by side near the Station Square and operated by the Port Authority. Though they are primarily a tourist attraction, they are used by locals and transfer tickets allow onward travel by bus or light rail.

Special viewing platforms have been built out over the side of the Mount to afford spectacular views of the little cable cars tracking up and down against the spectacular city scape and the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers and their many bridges.

Here the two cars pass on the Duquesne incline.

Another cityscape view. All of these pictures are of the Duquesne incline in July 2010. The Monongahela line, dating from 1870, is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the USA. The Duquesne was completed in 1877, is 800 feet long, but 400 feet in height being inclined at 30 degrees. Its gauge is an unusual 5 feet.
